In his first 16 games Chad Henne has thrown for 3,604 yards and completed 60.6% of his passes. He has thrown 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His quarterback rating is 77.4. The numbers don't necessarily make your jaw drop, but let's compare the numbers to the player most consider to be the best quarterback of this generation--Peyton Manning. In Manning's first NFL season he threw for 3,739 yards and completed only 56% of his passes. Manning tossed 26 touchdowns, but threw 28 interceptions. His quarterback rating was 71.2.

This is not to say that I believe Chad Henne will be the next Peyton Manning or that his career will resemble Manning's in any way. All I am saying is maybe we should keep things in perspective as Dolphin fans.
Manning also had Marshall Faulk and Edge after Faulk. I do think, however, we should consider that Manning was tossed into the fire and asked to lead the team, not protect the ball.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the numbers are encouraging, but I think the Manning comparison might not be the fairest comparison for Manning's sake. I think a better comparison would be closer to Philip Rivers, Matt Schaub or Aaron Rodgers and compare their number since they were an understudy just like Henne, while Manning was thrown into the fire like Jorge said and had to learn through his own mistakes.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good point. But at the same time, I think we need to consider that Henne has not had a stellar supporting cast either. Until this season he had mediocre receivers. Even now, all he has is Brandon Marshall. In the beginning of Manning's career he had stars at receiver, running back, and Marcus Pollard at tight end who was a solid if not above average tight end.
