Now I am going to get the inevitable argument from most football fans reading this. Brett is a gunslinger, the last of a kind. Brett holds the NFL record for touchdown passes. Yeah, so what? He also holds the record for most interceptions and is notorious for having many of his seasons end on his arm. In big time moments you can put money on it! Brett Favre will throw an interception. He will disappoint you. You will be going home empty handed. So let's stop this legend talk now. He was great in his prime, but he hasn't been in years. Don't dare point to his numbers last season as a defense that he still has something left in the tank. Regular season numbers may be impressive, but it's what you do in big moments that defines careers and Brett ended last season in similar fashion to the way he ended most of his seasons this decade...an interception.
We are not even half way through the 2010-2011 football season, but I am watching an old Brett Favre right now. I am watching Brett Favre single-handedly ruin any chance that the Minnesota Vikings have of winning a Super Bowl. Meanwhile, there is another story regarding Brett Favre that is somehow going under the radar. The Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger Scandal. No one seems to want to talk about the allegations swirling around that Brett Favre was sending nude pictures of himself to Jenn Sterger. Not only do we now have the picture evidence, but we have voicemails that Brett left on Jenn's phone. Say it ain't so Brett

What about Lebron James? The guy goes from being loved by America to being public enemy #1 all because he left his hometown team for a better chance at winning a championship ring. All of a sudden he's a coward, he is selfish, he doesn't care about his fans, etc. He is now a marked man and all of the talk regarding him has turned from highly positive to degrading. Is it fair? No. It isn't. Not even a little bit. Brett Favre deserves to be ridiculed and embarrassed just like any other athlete. But he's white. He deserves the benefit of the doubt. All because of the color of his skin.
i agree completely that race has to do with the perception of Favre in the scandal. You can't tell me if Terrell Owens was in the same position, he wouldn't just be ridiculed on ESPN 24/7. I think that's a better example than Vick since Vick's already been in trouble and been subject to ridicule.
ReplyDeleteAbout Favre just leaving, I think he can do whatever he wants. I was never a fan of his nor was I a hater of his, but I think if he loves the game why should he leave just because people think he should. He loves his job and people pay him millions to do what he loves. If someone were to pay me millions and want me badly, what reason should I leave for. I'm not going to make my decision based on some naysayers. What makes Favre finally leaving the spotlight an issue is the media coverage, not Favre himself. ESPN covers Favre like he lives in Bristol. It's just way too much coverage for a mediocre quarterback way past his prime. That's my main issue with Favre, but no one should make him leave because there are people that don't like him.
I agree with Gino's perspective, but I really think JC is just tired of Favre.
ReplyDeleteAnother good point would be to wonder whether Jenn Sterger will get the Ines Sainz treatment. Voluptuous white woman vs. voluptuous Hispanic.
Instead, what we hear is that Favre was super emotional and apologized to his teammates, but people barely criticize him for his selfish antics (skipping training camp, making himself the focus of every offseason since forever). I do not know why ESPN covers him so much for such pathetic and self-indulgent reasons, yet America has zero vitriol for the apparent philanderer (even if it were just one, you should hate him if you hate Woods) and selfish teammate (leBron is selfish as well now, after he left Cleveland).
Yes I am tired of Favre. I am tired of the adoration he receives from fans when he has been a fraud for years now. I think he's a good quarterback who at one point was great at what he did but if it wasn't for ESPN covering him 24/7 (coupled with the way he is covered, mainly positively) he wouldn't be in the NFL right now. It annoys me greatly to see ESPN talk about Favre as if he is a deity who can not be spoken of in a negative manner because that would be blasphemy.
